Mal Reynolds is captain of the Firefly-class transport ship Serenity, making a living for himself and his crew performing various jobs throughout the Outer Rim of the solar system. Mal is a former Browncoat, a sergeant of the Independents army during their Unification War against the Alliance of the inner planets. After loosing the war, Mal acquired his derelict ship which he named for the Battle of Serenity Valley, the turning point in the war and the symbol of the Browncoats' defeat. Mal now just hopes to live life on his own terms, as far as possible from the Alliance. His mission is best summed up in the show's opening: "Out here, people struggle to get by with the most basic technologies. A ship would bring you work. A gun would help you keep it. A captainís goal was simple: Find a crew. Find a job. Keep flying."
Construction Notes: Firefly has meant a lot to me for a long time and I really enjoy cosplaying Mal. The pants I sewed from an 18th century military pattern, and altered them several times to get the fit right. I did a lot of research into the suspenders they used on the show, and determined they were modified Israeli military issue. I found the same ones and modified them to match as closely to the screen-used ones as possible. The shirt is bought, though I've gone through several versions trying to find the right shade of purplish-red. I also bought the official coat which came out when the movie Serenity was released, though I don't care much for the color and may remake it myself at some point. Mal's pistol is a resin cast made of the limited run official prop, which I bought and painted. My favorite part of the costume, however, is the leather holster, which was my first foray into leather work. I took actual leather working classes to learn how holsters were made and recreated Mal's under the tutelage of an expert. I was so excited to learn a new fabricating skill, and have put to use what I learned making this holster for many costuming projects in the years since. My least favorite part of the costume are the boots, however. They are just plain costume boots and not particularly accurate; I'd love to upgrade my leather working skills to include cobbling, at which point I'd make my own pair for this.
