Peppermint Crunch is one of six ice cream-themed "Sundae Best" ponies released in 1987 by My Little Pony. The Sundae Best ponies create frozen confections at the ice cream shop, with Peppermint Crunch specializing in flavoring her sundaes with peppermint. Her cutie mark is pink and white striped soft-serve which resembles a peppermint stick, and she is mint-green colored as well as mint-scented. A Pegasus-style pony, Peppermint Crunch is the only one of the group with wings.
I wasn't into My Little Pony as a kid but someone gave me Peppermint Crunch from the Sundae Best series as a birthday gift. I loved her color scheme and she smelled fantastic - more like vanilla cake than peppermint. When I first decided to go to Dragon*Con in 2009 I was asked to join the My Little Pony costume group there; I thought the designs were cute and decided I had to make Peppermint Crunch. I chose to make her out of mint fleece to give the costume a horsehair-type look, and paired a corset top with a circle skirt bottom. I gave her bell sleeves and leg warmers edged in thick ribbon to suggest hooves and acknowledge the "pony" aspect a little more. Since her cutie mark was raised as opposed to painted on, I made it from craft foam to give it a more three-dimensional appearance. I made her wings from matching foam, deciding to make them pink and white so they'd stand out more against the green. Finally, back then most of the tails were made from feather boas or not included at all; I was adamant my tail would be made of hair and match my wig, so I safety pinned a matching wig to my corset to make the tail, which I was pretty proud of at the time and is now a common way of making pony tails. I no longer owned Peppermint Crunch when I made this so I was going from memory and just assumed she had a horn; she doesn't, but I like how it looks so I stuck with it. The ears and horn were originally handmade but years later I upgraded to the Yaya Han versions. I loved how this came out so much that I later recruited friends to pull together a full Sundae Best group, designing three of the other costumes and making two of them.
