Construction Notes:
When the film trailers for Tangled came out, I was inundated with messages from friends, family, and acquaintances, all saying the same thing: "Disney stole your FACE!" I had to admit, I did resemble Flynn, and couldn't deny the mannerisms were eerily similar, so I decided to make the costume and wear it to the movie's premiere. As a result, I made this working entirely from the promotional images. I was just getting into leather-working at the time and decided to make the vest from real cowhide; unfortunately my custom-ordered blue came in the entirely wrong color from what I'd hoped for. To salvage it, I used leather paint to color correct the shade and add highlights and aging to the vest. For construction, I used Simplicity 4059 and refitted it several times before it was correct. I used leather studs to add on the shoulder details and disassembled spring clips to custom make hooks which latched to metal purse loops to recreate Flynn's unique buckle closures. The vest actually closes with a zipper underneath for ease, with the buckles closing over it for show.
With the vest complete, the rest of the costume was relatively simple; I removed the collar from an old dress shirt to make Flynn's undervest shirt, and found tan fitted jeans that I altered by removing the back pockets and belt loops. The belts were handmade with excess leather pieces and the boots are store bought with added leather pieces for accuracy. His satchel is also bought, though I have the materials to make a screen-accurate one, which I'd like to do at some point. I also made Rapunzel's frying pan by hand carving rigid insulation foam, which I then wrapped in fiberglass and painted with textured spray paint. It was lightweight enough that I could bonk people on the head with it without anyone suffering harm, but it got wrecked when we used it for a skit and the cast member using it got a bit overaggressive in one of the fight scenes; another piece I'll remake at some point. I always enjoy wearing this costume, and Shiva loves it because the satchel is great for storing her stuff when we are walking around a con. Always make pockets, but when you can't, carry a satchel!
