Nurse Joy one of many members of the Joy Family, in which most female members are Nurses and work in Pokémon Centers. Although all Nurse Joys look almost identical, Brock, who is infatuated with them, claims he can identify each unique Nurse Joy. Most Nurse Joys work closely with Chansey Pokémon, who grow eggs which can help heal the injured.
As a teenager I watched the first two seasons of Pokémon because my younger brother was into it and I played Yellow on his Game Boy, both of which gave me a huge amount of street cred with the kids I taught at my summer job. Brock was my favorite character and I thought the design for Nurse Joy was adorable, so when Ellystar offered to make Officer Jenny and wear it with me I knew it was time to make Joy. For the pink dress I used my trusty Simplicity 4015 pattern, and altered it to accommodate the collar. The entire dress is made from pink cotton and is fully lined. I didn't have a pattern for the apron, so I winged it using one of the skirt panel patterns for the bottom part and gathering it to an interfaced waistband. I cut a square panel for the chest front, and self-patterned the straps, which I stuffed with quilting batting until I got the shape I wanted. The waistband snaps shut in the back with a detachable bow.
The hat and the Chansey plush were store bought, while the Pokéball was a last minute creation; I found a small globe at Target that was about the right size and painted it red and white. I used black electrical tape for the black hinge markings. I also didn't have a lot of time to do any crazy wig styling, so I wore a long pink wig pulled into loose ponytails. I then looped each ponytail and tied it around itself and pinned it in place. I'd like to improve it in the future so its more secure. Ellystar and I had a blast wearing these and I plan to wear this often!
