Samantha Parkington is celebrating her birthday in May of 1905 with a stylish new peppermint pinafore dress and a fancy garden party where she and her friends are expected to follow Grandmary's strict rules of etiquette. Her progressive Aunt Cornelia surprises her with a rare trip to downtown New York City, where they visit an upscale ice cream parlor and also encounter suffragists are rallying for the vote. As the political divide between the liberal Cornelia and the more conservative Grandmary comes to light, Samantha has to decide for herself what to believe is the proper role for women in modern society.
Samantha's original Pleasant Company birthday dress is another rare one to find in a size 16, and rarer still to find with the pinafore included. When one popped up on eBay in 2020 I grabbed it, and separately bought white shoes, socks, and a flower wreath to match the outfit. The peppermint pinefore dress is the only one of Samantha's outfits which is short-sleeved, so I wasn't sure how it would fit on me. Sure enough, it ended up being too tight in the sleeves even though it fit everywhere else. I altered the sleeves, using similar fabric, to allow for more give, but otherwise the dress is in its original condition. For the teddy bear Samantha receives for her birthday in honor of Teddy Roosevelt (and his daughter Eleanor, whom Samantha admired), I found a near-mint condition Pleasant Company bear which was a thing in the early 1990s - I had forgotten how much they looked like Samantha's bear but child-size, so it was the perfect substitute!
