RED XIII: Swimsuit
Final Fantasy VII

For a few years I had worn my swimsuit version of Rinoa Heartilly from Final Fantasy VIIIto the annual summer beach gathering, but in 2008 I decided it was time for something different. I've always wanted to cosplay Red XIII from Final Fantasy VII, and since many of my friends already had Final Fantasy VII swimsuits, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity. Unlike Rinoa, Red XIII isnít quite as waterproof and requires much more extensive and detailed body painting.

Construction Notes:
Finding a plain orange bikini for Red XIII was surprisingly easy and I grabbed it for $10 on eBay. I found a great bright orange shiny synthetic fabric in the bargain bin at Joannís that I used for the tail and ears, both of which are stuffed with quilting batting. The flame on the end of the tail was made by ripping off petals from orange, red, and yellow fabric flowers and sewing them into a fireball pattern. The ears are trimmed with white tufts of feather edging for the inside fur and two large black and white feathers which Red XIII wears tucked behind his ears, reminiscent of a native headdress. Both ears are sewn onto a black headband. The bracelets are empty ribbon spools spray-painted gold and then detailed to match Red XIIIís bracelet pattern with black acrylic paint, a thin brush and a steady hand. Several gold beads were sewn onto hair elastics to decorate two small ponytails on either side of my face. Red makeup is used for the eye markings and all of Red XIIIís tattoos are self-painted on with black Halloween makeup using a mirror and a thin brush.
