SAMANTHA PARKINGTON: Meet Dress
The American Girls Collection
I've had the American Girl
doll Samantha since 1991 when I got her for my 9th birthday. She had always been my favorite character from the book series, mostly because I loved her clothes! It was a childhood dream of mine to dress just like her.
This is actually the official Pleasant Company reproduction of Samantha's afternoon dress from Meet Samantha,
which was marketed in the early 1990s as part of an entire line of child-size "Dress Like Your Doll" outfits. At the time, Samantha dresses sold for $80 - $110 apiece, which was a fortune to a kid who saved up her babysitting money just to buy the doll clothes. The dresses famously ran quite large, and this child's size 16 - the largest size they made - fits an adult easily. I had previously found Samantha's Christmas dress which was a size 12 and fit me despite being slightly short in the sleeves, so being able to snag a couple of sizes larger solved that problem easily. I searched thrift stores to find a pink velvet snap purse just like Samantha's and a wine-colored felt hat which I accented with decorative ropes and ribbons to more closely mimic Samantha's. Finally I picked up a pair of black Victorian-style shoes to complete the outfit.
