RINOA HEARTILLY: Ballroom Dress Final Fantasy VIII
Making this dress was the result of a mistake; I had picked out a few yards of off-white satin and pale yellow overlay for another project and decided the colors weren't working. However, I realized they would be perfect for Rinoa's ballroom dress.
I used one of my cocktail dresses as a pattern; the underdress is modeled after an A-line design from an off-white Casa satin. The sheer yellow overlay is patterned to match with two seams running down the sides. The overlay attaches to the dress along the top hem. For the trim a yellow ribbon was top stitched along this top hem, hiding the seam where the two fabrics come together. The ribbon extends past the neck to wrap around and fasten in the back of the neck with both a snap and a clasp. An invisible side zipper under the right arm closes the dress. The shoes I already had from a floor-length yellow dress I had worn in high-school; I sewed more of the trim ribbon onto the sides of the shoes and fastened the ribbons around the ankle with Velcro.
